Instructor Joy Owen did college coursework in British history while living in the north of the country from 1981-1984. She teaches our England, the North Country course and travels back to her second home “at least once a year to keep it fresh and visit new points of interest. I keep in touch with friends in the UK throughout the year and spend a lot of time planning my next trip and all the fabulous new adventures I want to try!” When we asked her what she likes about teaching, she replied, “I ALWAYS learn from my classes. That’s part of the fun for me. I try to keep the class light and open for discussion. I want attendees to feel comfortable in sharing their knowledge with the class. My class is, hopefully, an exciting experience that invites people to reach out to other parts of the UK as travel destinations. London is fabulous, but there is so much more.” Visit our website to register for Joy’s class, which takes place February 8. Join in on her excitement and she will share her love of travel and of England with you!

If you have been considering traveling to England, don’t miss out on Joy Owen’s upcoming class, England-The North Country.  Her students have said that she is “one of the most enthusiastic instructors I have ever known.”  Student Marc Clapp, who took the class this summer, wrote, “It was an awesome experience.  A fountain of information.”  Get your trip planning started right with Joy’s guidance.  Her next class takes place on 9/28, followed by Travel Packing 101 on 10/8!

England, the North Country
This year, let England be your oyster!  Great Britain (the combination of Wales, Scotland, and England) is an island about the size of California and easily traversed through a wide variety of convenient transport.  In “England, the North Country,” we will dispel the myth that London is the only viable destination in England.
“I found Joy Owen’s class on the UK very informative! I started out knowing very little about the UK and how I wanted to plan my visit. Joy was able to highlight must-see sites, as well as, unique, but, lesser-known sites all across the UK. This helped me narrow down places I wanted to see and things I wanted to do on my trip. One area I knew I wanted to visit after Joy’s class was the Lake District. Joy shared such beautiful photos and charming stories of this area, that I just knew I had to experience it. I’m so glad I did! It was also very helpful that Joy could identify specific restaurants, B&Bs, and stores that were worth visiting in various areas. With so many options in the cities, it was nice to have a few places personally recommended by Joy. She has such excitement and knowledge for all things UK, it’s definitely contagious!” –M. Steely
Though London (and even Wales and Scotland) will be discussed, the focus of the course will be on things to do outside of the London area and further North. The stunning scenery of Cumbria and Yorkshire was the birthplace of landscape art, has inspired some of Britain’s most renowned painters and writers.
As an add-on to this course, consider signing up for Travel Packing 101 which takes an in-depth look at packing tips and tricks for overseas and extended travel.
